How Most of Us Learn About Equity Compensation

As I sat across the table, I smiled and nodded, pretending to understand everything. The HR rep detailed the offer: a generous salary, bonus, and a set of incentive stock options.

While I knew this was the highest cash compensation I had ever received, the stock options baffled me. I had no idea what they truly meant.

Navigating Stock Compensation: My Journey

I decided to have my stock options agreement reviewed by a lawyer specializing in stock options, which cost me $400 an hour.

This investment was educational, helping me understand the crucial clauses and legal terms. However, understanding the actual value of these options remained a challenge.

I realized many others shared my confusion—there's no college course on equity compensation for tech employees.

From Confusion to Success

After my first IPO and a seven-figure payday, I faced the daunting task of managing a multi-million dollar portfolio.

The need to diversify and manage this wealth was overwhelming. Through my journey, I realized that managing money is just as challenging as earning it.

The Education Gap

As I wound down my corporate career and started my private equity firm, Wealthward Capital, I've found that most tech professionals share my challenge.

It is very difficult to find answers to the questions we have around Tech Equity and Money. 

There's a widespread lack of understanding about the types of compensation available and how to manage them, which is a significant hurdle for many.

Launching Tech Careers and Money Talk

I launched the "Tech Careers and Money Talk" podcast a year ago to address these gaps. Six months later, I started the "Tech Careers and Money News" to further educate tech professionals on the interplay between career advancement and financial management.

While serving tech employees, I realized the content was too broad and not focused enough.

Introducing Tech Equity and Money News

Reflecting on the past year, I have decided to rebrand and refocus my efforts. Introducing "Tech Equity and Money News"

and the podcast "Tech Equity and Money Talk."

Both of these properties will fall under the umbrella of Tech Equity and Money University.

This media and education company will be focused on filling the education gap around equity compensation and portfolio building.

Its mission is to help 1000 tech employees become financially independent so they can impact the world.
